About Isabell Schierenbeck

I am Deputy Head of Department and Professor in Political Science at the School of Global Studies. I hold a doctoral degree from the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg. I did my post-doc at University of California, Berkeley. Alongside research, PhD supervision, and lecturing I am Deputy Head of Department with responsibility for research and research education. I also give lectures and consultations as expert (on Middle Eastern politics) for radio, TV and the daily press.

Areas of interest
My main research areas are nation and state building (focusing on political leadership), democratization (in the Middle East), the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and Israeli domestic politics. Most recently, I have started a research project on the transnational policyarena and aid in Rwanda, Zambia and Ethiopia.

My earlier research includes research on the barriers to care for patients suffering from mental illness (in South Africa and Rwanda). I have also conducted research in public administration with special focus on street-level bureaucrats and immigrant clients (at Employment offices and Social welfare offices), and on the Social Insurance Office and clients on long-term sick-leave.

Current projects
I am currently working with the following research projects:

What room for whom in the transnational policy making arena in aid recipient states? A comparative study of Ethiopia, Rwanda and Zambia.
Together with Malin Hasselskog; financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Teaching and tutoring

I supervise the follwing PhD candidates:

Carin Berg (main supervisor)
Wayne S. Coetzee (main supervisor)
Meike Froitzheim (co-supervisor)
Arne Wachenhut (co-supervisor)

Earlier teaching experience includes lecturing on public policy and administration, comparative politics, Middle Eastern politics, research design, and interview methodology.
