The Environmental Social Science (ESS) PhD-programme provides a platform for interrogating how we understand and investigate the relationships between society and the environment. A cornerstone of the ESS programme is the application of cutting edge social theory to environmental questions, in conversation with the natural and biological sciences.
"The biggest challenge is not the lack of knowledge of how the climate is changing due to emissions of greenhouse gases, but how we can act collectively, locally and globally, to decrease the emissions" says Per Knutsson, Senior Lecturer at SGSWe bring together scholars from across the Faculty of Social Science to tackle the complex conceptual and methodological challenges of today’s environmental issues. The programme offers students the opportunity to be co-supervised by staff across the Faculty of Social Sciences on interdisciplinary environmental topics.
Our location in the School of Global Stuides capitalises on the links between departments in the School (Human Ecology, Peace and Development, Social Anthropology, Human Rights), and across the Faculty (Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Media Studies, Public Administration, Psychology, and Social Work). Working language for the program is English.
