"Folkhögskolans uppgift är att rädda människor som mår dåligt!": Projects of existential wellness, social care, and inclusive democracy at a Swedish folk high school

Carolyn Rebecca Merritt, Ph.D candidate, UCLA. Social Anthropology seminar.

This talk is based on ethnographic data for my doctoral dissertation in psychological and medical anthropology at UCLA, drawn from ongoing fieldwork I am conducting in Sweden during the 2017-18 academic year. Preceding formal data analysis, this presentation focuses on conceptual themes I see emerging after 6 months of immersive participant-observation at a rural, residential folk high school for adults, complemented by visits to three other folk high schools and interviews with several members of the National Council for Adult Education (Folkbildningsrådet) and the Organization for Civil Society Folk High Schools (Rörelsefolkhögskolornas Intresseorganisation). With a focus on high-school completion courses (allmänna kurser) at folk high schools, my research examines how understandings of what it means to be ¿well¿ (att må bra) and care practices that aim to foster ¿well-being¿ in these schools are entangled with larger contemporary projects of cultivating democracy and (re)imagining the boundaries of national inclusion in Sweden. At this stage in my fieldwork process I especially welcome feedback and suggestions for how I can continue to develop key themes in the research, how I can link the ethnographic and conceptual content to broader contemporary realities in Sweden, and recommendations for readings or other relevant sources.
