Mid-term seminar: Planning for socially sustainable cities

Doktorandseminarium

PhD project that deals with the role of knowledge use when giving social sustainability meaning in a context of goal conflicts in urban planning.

Hannah Saldert conduct a case study of the development project Älvstaden, specifically Frihamnen, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Frihamnen aims to develop a sustainable central city area, with a specific focus on social sustainability. Saldert understand urban planning as (urban) environmental governance, and a strategy to implement social sustainability. While social sustainability is attracting attention in both policy and academia, there are still challenges when implementing the aspect. Inherent conflicts between sustainability dimensions and the conflictual process of urban planning increase the complexity of implementation. The meaning of social sustainability depends on which actors and knowledges are included. Therefore, Saldert focus on how knowledges are integrated to manage goal conflicts; and how this affects the discourse on social sustainability in planning for a sustainable urban area.
