About Anja Karlsson Franck

I hold a PhD in economic geography from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg but since March 2013 I work at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg.

My main research interests relate to gender, labor and migration - with a particular interest in how people maneuver and navigate both social and geographical borders.

In my PhD I explore Malaysian women’s room to maneuver in the labor market in the context of an export-oriented economy. After defending my thesis I have largely worked on research projects relating to migration. In particular Burmese labor migration to Malaysia and, in recent years, also migration to the European Union via Greece. In this work I have taken a particular interest in the strategies of migrants and refugees, in everyday life and during the journey - and how these strategies, in turn, infringe on the state's ability to control mobility and produce migrants as particular legal and social subjects.

In my current research I focus, financed by Forte, I focus on how the new Swedish policy regime on migration and asylum impacts the room to maneuver of newly arrived refugees - looking particularly at the joint impact of temporality, employer-sponsorship and deportability.
