Gunilla’s research interests are on human impact on rural and peri-urban ecosystems with focus on land use, food production, agricultural activities and conservation of natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem services within the context of sustainable development. She is project leader and participant in a number of interdisciplinary research projects emphasizing landscape dynamics in relation to land use and socio-economic factors in Europe and Africa: Madagascar, Tanzania and Ivory Coast. Gunilla’s research collaboration with social and humanistic sciences (Archaeology, Environmental History and Geography) has continued since 1984. An example is the mega project The cultural landscape during 6000 in Sweden, (see publication list: Berglund ed.1991) and several EU-project. The projects BioScene EU FRP5; SECOA EU FRP 7; RETHINK EU-ERANET studied agricultural restructuring, effects of agricultural activities on biodiversity and human livelihoods in European mountain regions, cities in coastal regions with climate challenges and sustainable food production in Europe. Research funding has been received from EU research, Norwegian Research Council, NORAD, SIDA, Formas, Vetenskapsrådet, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Nordiskt Kollegium för ekologi and Naturvårdsverket.

Current research projects
Gunilla’s research interests on food systems and food security with direct links to global sustainability issues have increasingly become dominating and several new research projects are under development.

Current research Project EU-ERANET RETHINK, Rethinking the link between farm modernisation, rural development and resilience in a world of increasing demands and finite resources,  is on sustainable food production in (14 countries) where the Swedish research group focuses on land use, food production and ecosystem services in peri-urban areas, specifically the Hisingen area in Gothenburg.

The research project Traditional ecological knowledge and community based management of woodland resources in the Xylophone Triangle, Ivory Coast and Mali is on traditional knowledge as a tool for management of biological resources in agri-ecosystems in West Africa. Collaborating partners are Dr S. Ouattara and Prof. S. Dhillion.

Teaching and supervision
Gunilla teaches in PhD and master courses, and a number of basic level courses.
PhD courses: Valuation of resources and environmental conflicts, The political ecology of land use; Global environmental challenges; Conservation biology and Vegetation ecology.
Master courses: Sustainable development: conflicts, communication and collaboration; Adaptation to global change; Theories and concepts in global studies; Sustainable landscapes; Human landscape ecology; Plant ecology and biodiversity.

She is also a supervisor for theses at bachelor, master and PhD levels.
Hitherto she has supervised 11 PhD theses students and 34 master theses at Lund University, NTNU-Trondheim, and at the universities in Antananarivo, Dar es Salaam, Butare, Karlstad and Gothenburg.
