Work Experience

I worked as a classroom teacher in Japan (2002-2003), the United States (2004-2007), Sweden (2007-2009), and the Occupied West Bank (2010-2011).

 

Areas of Interest

My main area of interest is constructive classroom conflict. Specifically, I am interested in the ways in which teachers and students transform potentially destructive conflict situations into educational opportunities.

More broadly, my research interests correspond with the (sub)fields of the sociology of education, the sociology of emotion, and critical education and include: the school's democratic mission; everyday acts of resistance among teachers and students; and the ways in which identiy, context, and emotion are employed by educational actors as they enact classroom conflict.

More recently, I began studying how academic writing is incorporated into university courses in the Social Sciences.

 

Current Research

For my dissertation, I am generating grounded theory that explains how and why constructive classroom conflict is accomplished through the joint actions of teachers and students and how learning arises as a consequence of those joint actions.

I am concurrently co-authoring articles on conflict theory and the (successful) incorporation of academic writing into an introductory course in international relations at the School of Global Studies.

 

Teaching

I began teaching at the University of Gothenburg in 2012. Since then, I have taught PDG085: Children’s Rights and Realities and PDG081: Conflict Resolution in Pre-schools and Schools. I have also lectured in PDG011 and GS2122. I currently serve as an academic writing coach in IR1111.

 

Departmental Duties and Positions of Trust

I served as the chair of the Ph.D. council at the School of Global Studies from January 2018- December 2019. I work on the department's Pedagogy Team where I help organize and facilitate seminars and workshops for teaching staff. I have facilitated a Writers' Workshop for Ph.D. students since 2019. Finally, I am a member of the editorial team for School of Blogal Studies (https://www.blogalstudies.com/), our department's blog.
