About Sanna Strand

I hold a BA in Global Studies from University of Gothenburg and an MSc in Global Security Studies from University of Glasgow. I am currently a Doctoral Candidate in Peace and Development Studies here at the School of Global Studies (SGS). During 2017, I spent a year as a Visiting Research Scholar at the City University of New York (CUNY).

Research:
My research focuses on intersections between war, military power and recruitment, neoliberal governmentality and gendered and sexualized (soldier) identities. In my thesis, I study how the Swedish abandonment of conscription in favour of a professional, all-volunteer force in 2010 has transformed the image of the Swedish Armed Forces in society. The thesis addresses broader questions regarding how military missions, mandates and careers are rendered attractive and legitimate to citizens as well as how commercials, advertisements, interactive media channels and other market strategies are shaping civil-military relations in liberal democracies.

Areas of Interest:
• Critical Military Studies
• Feminist International Relations
• Critical Security Studies
• Governmentality and neoliberalism
• Civil-military relations
• Military recruitment and retention
• Militarism and militarization
• Marketization and nation branding

Teaching:
I am teaching a class titled Security and Conflict in a Transforming World and have lectured and supervised broadly within the fields of Critical Security Studies and International Relations here at the School of Global Studies. I have also lectured on Postcolonial and Feminist theories of International Relations at the New School, New York.
