Blogging to make academia more accessible

News: Sep 18, 2018

Do you want to get to know the world of global studies - from the inside? blogalstudies.com is a new blog where several staff members at the School of Global Studies write about current topics related to their work. The aim is outreach, communication and to establish relations both within and outside the world of academia.

Here are three quick questions to founders Johannes Theodor Aalders, PhD student in Social Environmental Science, and Swati Parashar, associate professor in Peace and Development Research.

Why is there a need for a blog about global studies?
“Academia tends to be a rather exclusive affair. That means that most texts academics write will only be read by other academics. That is problematic for several reasons. Not only does the general public deserve to benefit from our work (after all their tax money pays our salaries). It is also important for us to think about our work as something that is relevant to more than just a couple of specialists in our field. This is particularly relevant in the field of global studies, as it can help us in our efforts to not only write about “global” issues, but also write them for a global audience,” says Johannes Theodor Aalders.

“A blog is the easiest and quickest way to get serious ideas across, to offer an informed comment or to respond to global events. Global studies is about the way the world is changing and we need to adapt to it by keeping ourselves informed. It is also a good way to reach out to non-academic audiences,” says Swati Parashar.

What will you and the contributors write about?
“As the editorial team, we only set very few limits on what people can write about. We expect the posts to be somehow connected to our work here at Global Studies, but that covers a lot of ground: from global political economy, to porcelain in ancient China and personal perspectives on the Swedish elections. The topics are as diverse as the people at Global Studies. And if that isn’t enough, we also work with guest-bloggers and people visiting our department,” says Johannes Theodor Aalders.

What do you hope the blog will achieve?
“Personally, I hope that the blog will achieve mainly one thing: create more relations. With that I mean relations between the writers and people who are interested in the topics we cover, but do not have access to academic journals; between readers of our blog who can discuss our posts in the comment section; and not least also within the School of Global Studies, as the blog offers an opportunity to discover what colleagues are working on or thinking about in a new way,” says Johannes Theodor Aalders.

“We want to be a one-stop-shop for all the good work that colleagues at SGS are engaged in!” says Swati Parashar.
