Upcycling workshop: bringing new life to 'waste' items

News: Sep 24, 2018

Act! Sustainable is an entire week filled with activities and inspiration around sustainable development issues for all students in Gothenburg. At the Upcycling workshop at the School of Global Studies on Friday 28 September, participants will get the chance to give new life to items they might’ve otherwise thrown out.

Veronica Kecki is one of the students behind the workshop:

What will happen during the workshop?
“Every participant brings one item from home (things that would typically be thrown away or laying around without a purpose in an average household such as plastic bags or fabric scraps), and together we're going to repurpose those items into something new such as jewellery or home décor.”

What is upcycling?
“Upcycling in the traditional sense is reusing an item in a way that would create a higher value for it, however for this particular event we are especially focused on the sustainability issue, trying to repurpose items that would otherwise be discarded resulting in a waste of materials and an unnecessary addition to the landfills.”

What are your best tips for upcycling? What kind of items are good to start with?
“The best tip for upcycling items is to stay creative and keep an open mind! It's important to think outside of the social norms that might have been established around what constitutes value and what is waste. Inspect the item you are considering to discard: is it structurally undamaged? Can it be reused for something else? Is the only reason you're about to throw it away is because the item is simply visually unappealing? If so, can you maybe repaint it / upholster it / reshape it?”

Why did you want to be part of the Act! Sustainable week?
“The Act! Sustainable week is a spectacular initiative that has succeeded at reaching a great number of students around Gothenburg, as well as the general public. One way of making our societies more sustainable is for everyone to share their knowledge and skills with others – and this is exactly why I've decided to participate. The Act! Sustainable week is a great platform that allows me to share some of the upcycling projects that I've done myself in the past as a hobby with others. Not only is it going to be fun to upcycle together, but I also hope that the participants will take some of these ideas and implement them further as a part of their everyday lives.”
