Jan Eliasson, Visiting Professor 2008-2009

Ambassador Jan Eliasson is awared The Torgny Segerstedt visiting professorship for the academic year 2008-2009

"With his long commitment for global issues Jan Eliasson is a most worthy holder of the professorship. Through his career has he worked for Peace, Development and Human Rights. With his indefatigble and constant commitment has he made  Swedens foreign policy characterized by humanity and cooperation. We are therefore delighted for that he has accepted our offer." says the Vice-Chancellor of Gothenburg University Pam Fredman.

Between 1994 and 1999 Jan Eliasson was State Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He was appoited Sweden's Ambassador to Washington D.C in 2000-2004. Ambassador Jan Eliasson's long and impressive diplomatic career led him to be appointed Sweden's Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2006.

During his career as a diplomat Jan Eliasson has had several important assignments for the United Nations. The following description is in no way a complete account: In the 1980s Jan Eliasson was personal counsellor to the swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme when Olof Palme was serving as UN's mediator between Iran and Iraq. In 1988-1992 he served as Sweden's Permanent Representativt to the UN. From 1992 to 1994 was he the first UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. During the 2005-2006 session Jan Eliasson was the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Jan Eliasson is currently the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Dafur, Sudan.
