Ezechiel Sentama

Dr. Ezechiel Sentama holds a PhD in Peace and Development Research from the University of Gothenburg. He also holds international certificates on Peacebuilding (USA), Genocide (Denmark), and Security (Macedonia). He is currently a guest researcher at the University of Gothenburg, School for Global Studies (January 1—December 31, 2018), and a permanent researcher and lecturer in the Center for Conflict Management, at the University of Rwanda (since 2000), and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) since 2015.

Ezechiel has expertise on reconciliation, human rights, peace education and peacebuilding. His doctoral dissertation discussed peacebuilding in post-genocide Rwanda and has demonstrated the extent to which cooperative organizations have the potential to reconcile post-genocide divides—genocide survivors and former genocide perpetrators, as well as their respective family members.

As a consultant, Ezechiel took part in various studies on human rights, reconciliation, governance, and socio-economic development. For example, he was hired by the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (Rwanda) to conduct studies on reconciliation, including the "Qualitative study on critical findings of the 2010 Rwanda Reconciliation Barometer" (2012), the second "Rwanda Reconciliation Barometer" (2015) the production of a book on "Reconciliation Process in Rwanda: 20 years after the 1994 genocide against Tutsi".

He was also hired by the civil society organizations to undertake studies on "The socio-economic living conditions of the Historically Marginalized People (HMP) in Rwanda", "The living conditions of Rwandans under Ubudehe categorization", and "Citizens’ participation in decentralized governance in Rwanda", among others. Ezechiel also moderated various local and international trainings on issues pertaining to peace, conflict, human rights and advocacy, leadership, and research methods. To this point, he produced three training modules, notably on Mediation, Human Rights and Advocacy, and Public Policy Monitoring and Advocacy.

Under a Research Collaboration Agreement with the School of Global Studies of the University of Gothenburg (2014-2016), Ezechiel was a co-applicant and part of the research team that carried out a three years research project on “Peace education’s impact on relationship building and societal conflicts: The case of Rwanda, Israel-Palestine and Macedonia.”

As a guest researcher at the School of Global Studies (SGS), his research project is on "Making Reconciliation Effective for Peacebuilding—which approach works best?" The case of Rwanda and Sri Lanka. At SGS, Ezechiel is engaged with the Research Group on "Power, Resistance and Social Change" and works on the four articles: "Official Narratives of Armed conflict history and counter-narratives of resistance: The case of Israel-Palestine, Rwanda and former Yugoslavia" forthcoming in the Journal of Political Power (2019), "Building Peace from below: Experiments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia", "The relational legacy of colonial education on post-colonial education in Rwanda: applicability of imagined geographies", and "The ripple effect of peace education: how its effects can spread to wider society?"

Since January 2014, Ezechiel owns, and is the Managing Director of, a research and training company, SEMPAX Ltd., which focuses on areas pertaining to Peace, Conflict, Security, Governance and Development.
